50s-french-army-zouave-pants
50s French Army Zouave Pants with vest

H I S T O R Y

These are French military Zouave trousers from around the 1950s. The Zouaves were an elite light infantry unit composed of Algerians, formed in 1830 following the French occupation of Algeria. This style originated when the traditional attire of the local Berber people was adopted as a military uniform, intended for combat in the harsh mountainous regions and deserts of North Africa. Designed with paramount consideration for breathability in hot climates and ease of movement in sandy terrain, this Algerian-born design became a symbol of the French elite forces and gained worldwide recognition after its success in the Crimean War. These trousers were born from a complex and profound historical background, embodying an ethnic costume aesthetic despite being military wear.

D E T A I L

The material is cotton-based, with a lustrous texture likely blended with silk. The fabric is remarkably light, giving it a refined quality rarely seen in military items. It can be worn comfortably from spring to mid-summer. The unique balloon silhouette features volume around the waist and thighs, tapering towards the hem. This structure was originally designed to accommodate vigorous movement in the desert, a testament to form following function. The hem features a drawstring, allowing for cinching.

Belt loops are attached to the waist. The long inseam is due to the historical practice of securing the hems with gaiters. The remaining drawstring at the hem is a vestige of this. Today, styling that balances the length by tucking the hems into socks is also recommended.

A noteworthy design feature is the embroidery on the sides, with large, symmetrical geometric patterns. While many Zouave trousers feature white stitching, the embroidery on this particular piece is a slightly yellowish ecru. It is linen embroidery. This motif, featuring vertically connected diamond and rhombus lattice patterns, originates from the traditions of the indigenous Algerian people, from whom the Zouave unit was formed. It is a highly designed pair of trousers that, despite being military wear, exudes an ethnic costume feel. These trousers possess an expression not found in modern clothing, and they are so excellent that even famous domestic brands have used them as a design source this season. Additionally, a rare matching vest is included.

C O N D I T I O N

There are repair marks on the back hem and a roughly 2cm scratch on the right side of the waist. Please refer to images 16 and 17 for confirmation. The damage is almost unnoticeable when worn.

S I Z E

Model: 173cm, 58kg

Size Tag: None (Equivalent to M)

Waist: 80cm

Rise: 41cm

Inseam: 75cm

Total Length: 112cm
