This is an indigo linen byodo smock, estimated to be from the 1900s.
This is a particularly rare item of French workwear, and was worn by horse and cattle traders (maquignons), as well as farmers, market merchants and artisans.
Beyod smocks were made by hand by tailors and their families in rural France in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were not ready-made but were tailored to fit the wearer's body type and purpose, so each one is different in every detail, such as the way the gathers are placed, the position of the pockets, and the specifications of the buttons. At the time, indigo linen was very expensive, so repairs and customizations were made over the years, and many of the surviving pieces still bear traces of this work. Filled with the charm of being one-of-a-kind, it can truly be said to be the king of French vintage.
This Biyodo is made of linen fabric. Natural indigo dyeing, faded look with age, softness and It has the characteristic dangling, swaying texture of French linen.
The front has a hook and eye fastener and a D-shaped pocket on the left chest. There are three buttons on the right side as well as buttons on the collar, but these are added as part of the design. Because horse traders need to gain trust in negotiations, the bijouterie needed to give off a "well-organized impression without being too rough." It is believed that the design was created to achieve this, combining both practicality and decorativeness. Sleeve cuffs and The delicate gathers around the neck are incredibly beautiful and demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship of the artisans at the time.
All of the original white mother-of-pearl buttons from that time are still intact, giving the garment a very elegant appearance despite being workwear, and there is great value in the very appearance of the garment.
The condition of the garment shows signs of repair in a few places. There is a few millimeters of damage on the chest area, but no other noticeable scratches and no damage that would detract from the look. All of the original white mother-of-pearl buttons are still there, and although it is workwear, it is very elegant, and the appearance of this garment itself is very valuable.
The size is generous with a unique pattern and width, but anyone around 175cm or shorter can wear it regardless of body type. Anyone taller than that may find the sleeves a little short.
This rare smock is not only valuable as vintage French workwear, but also has the beauty of the clothing itself. Don't miss this opportunity!
