~30s French Work Blue Cotton Twill Jacket

HISTORY

In the 1930s, France saw the industrialization of railways, ports, factories, and other areas, and navy cotton twill work clothes dyed with a color known as bleu de travail (work blue) became widespread. This item was made in the early days of this style. It features wood buttons typical of the early 1930s. From the 1940s onwards, these were replaced by urea resin and metal buttons for durability and cost reasons, so it is rare to find an item that still has wood buttons. Furthermore, wood buttons tend to crack easily when exposed to moisture and are replaced in later years, but this item remains intact and in its original condition.

DETAIL

The deep navy blue cotton twill fabric has aged to create a soft drape and corner wear. It has a simple design with a small round collar and three patch pockets on the chest and waist. There is no inner tag or brand tag, but all the buttons are the original wood buttons, and the cuffs have buttons of the same material. The back has a center seam and bar closures at key points, giving it attractive details that are reminiscent of workwear of the time.

CONDITION

There is some discoloration and slight pilling overall, and small neps here and there, but the fabric is still firm and there is no major damage, although there are some weaving marks on the back that appear to be from the manufacturing process. The wooden buttons are original and unbroken, and there are no stains or odors that would interfere with use.
