These are French military M47 field trousers. The single top button at the waist and slightly tapered silhouette suggest that this is a later model. However, the material used is cotton hopsack (plain weave).
This is a very rare model that is different from the cotton twill of the early period and the herringbone twill of the later period. It was adopted experimentally at the time to cope with the hot climate of the deployment area. Compared to the early and later periods, the fabric is softer and lighter, making it suitable for summer and can be worn all year round.
This is a well-known masterpiece that goes without saying, and can be said to be the origin and pinnacle of military pants. The distinctive feature of these pants is that they are carefully crafted even in the parts that cannot be seen.
At the time, sewing machines were not widely available, there were no overlock machines, and it was not possible to adjust the stitching, so the garments were sewn with very fine sewing machines. Even compared to modern technology, these garments were made with specifications that took an overwhelming amount of time to make and beautiful stitching.
The pocket flaps are reinforced with lining. Even the side pockets are double welt pockets that require a lot of work to sew, and even when turned inside out, there is a patch on the crotch and reinforcement on the pockets. There are so many intricate details that it would be impossible to list them all.
Martin Margiela was so enamoured with these intricately crafted pants that he famously had models wear them inside out on the runway.
I feel that this level of craftsmanship was only possible thanks to the French techniques that are at the origin of fashion. These pants are embodied in the techniques that were only possible thanks to the craftsmanship of the people who were involved in the manufacture of clothing at the time, who then produced these garments as military uniforms.
