HISTORY

Under material restrictions during World War II, "Salt & Pepper" (a marbled twill made of alternating black and off-white threads) became the mainstream work fabric in French ateliers and repair shops. While there was a shortage of indigo for indigo dyeing, this fabric, which could be made using a cotton blend, was made for applications that were highly resistant to wear and made oil stains less noticeable. This particular item is an atelier jacket that was likely used during the post-war reconstruction period in the late 1940s. After being worn for a long time, it was repeatedly patchworked and darned by the owner, making it a piece that strongly reflects the "rag" culture that has been passed down privately in France - the spirit of "repairing and passing on the wear" .

DETAIL

The salt and pepper cotton blend fabric has a deep look with a grey background and raw heathered yarns. The lapels have a shallow V-zone, tailored collar, and three bakelite buttons lined up on the front, all of which remain intact. The cuffs are cut off and set to about three-quarter length. This is a practical customization that was often done at the time to avoid sparks and machine oil, or to improve workability in the summer, and it remains as it is. The back has a narrow malting style with a center seam. In addition, the repair patches are layered with houndstooth and plain black twill patches, and the buttonholes and areas where the fabric has thinned are reinforced with hand stitching, making this a unique piece that has been repaired over the years.

CONDITION

The overall look is faded and shrunk, and the fabric is soft and comfortable. There are scuffs and pinholes on the placket, cuffs, and hem. All have been repaired with the original patch and darning. There is no structural damage and it is suitable for everyday wear. The short cut cuffs are sewn with a sewing machine and hand stitching.
