HISTORY

  • This pullover linen smock was issued to shipboard workers of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) during World War II. The "BAW 41" stamp on the inside is proof that it was inspected and issued to the government at a clothing factory in Wilhelmshaven in 1941. It was manufactured for a limited period from 1939 to 1944. It was used in actual combat on the Atlantic front, and many were incinerated or discarded after the war, so very few remain. There are fewer in circulation than army uniforms, making it a rare piece that symbolizes the Kriegsmarine.

DETAIL

  • The fabric is a thick, yet comfortable linen herringbone drill. The natural off-white color highlights the twill weave in natural light. There is a large work pocket on the chest, and key areas are reinforced with thick thread and bar tacks. The placket has aluminum buttons to reduce reflections, and the hem has a cotton rope drawstring. The cuffs have tab fastenings to prevent snagging. The roomy box silhouette is perfect for layered summer styles. This piece stands out with the drapery that sways and jiggles, which is unique to linen.

CONDITION

  • Deadstock in stock. It has been washed once because it was slightly dirty. There is no other noticeable damage. It is rare to find deadstock. Please consider this opportunity.
