40s WWⅡ USN SALVAGE PARKA SMOCK "DEADSTOCK"

HISTORY

This is a 1940s US Navy salvage smock parka. During World War II, the US Navy issued a pullover smock for deck work, salvage, rescue, decontamination, and other missions that involved exposure to water, oil, chemicals, and wind and snow. It was called different names depending on the mission and documents, including Gunner Smock, Salvage Parka, and Gas-Protective (Decontaminate) Parka. All of them share the same design: a protective work smock that can be quickly pulled over the top.

DETAIL

Evolving from the original button-up design, it features two large diagonally-arranged flap pockets, cuff straps, a deep front closure, and an integrated hood, all of which are designed to enhance protection and storage. The hood is designed to be worn over a gas mask. It's oversized. Made from off-white cotton twill, it has been dyed or reused depending on the mission and era. This particular example is an undyed, off-white garment. To withstand rugged use, it utilizes extensive blind stitching to cover seams. The flat back minimizes snagging, enhancing durability, water resistance, and wind resistance, making it a classic U.S. military item. Sizes are indicated by the number of stitches on the pocket; this example is equivalent to an XL with four stitches. Its simple yet streamlined details create a sense of space.

CONDITION

This is dead stock. There is some slight dirt due to storage. Of course, a chin strap is included.
