This is a deadstock black moleskin jacket manufactured by Mont St Michel around the 1950s.

    【Le Mont St Michel】
Le Mont St Michel is an indispensable presence when discussing French vintage workwear. Its history began in 1913 with its founding in Pontorson, near the Mont Saint-Michel abbey in Normandy, France. Starting as a small family-run workshop, it became widely popular among local artisans and farmers during the 1920s and 30s. Through aggressive advertising, it grew into a leading brand in Western France. Its unique quality standards, which strictly differentiated pockets and stitching according to usage, such as for farming, coal mining, hunting, and school children, emphasized durability and functionality above all else. Even in the vintage market, it is still highly regarded as the pinnacle of French workwear.

    【About Moleskin】
"Mole" means the animal in English, and as the name suggests, it is a material characterized by a fur-like smoothness and luster due to its double-sided napping. It is made with a weft-faced sateen weave, where more weft threads float on the surface, and as it is worn, the unique texture of moleskin develops. The densely woven fabric is wind-resistant and abrasion-proof, making it a representative French material that offers both functionality and the ability to age beautifully. In an era without synthetic fibers, moleskin, created with practical use and change in mind, is truly a timeless piece.

The V-shaped pockets common in the 30s and 40s transitioned to square pockets around this period. This particular item features U-shaped hemline pockets, symbolizing 1950s Mont Saint-Michel. This individuality is characteristic of the brand during a transitional period. The brand tag is a printed tag, which replaced the embroidered tags used until the 40s and was adopted from the 1950s onwards. Items from this era with unique details are rare and highly sought after.

There are almost no noticeable stains from storage. It is in deadstock condition with a flasher and no pre-washing. The size is marked 58, which is equivalent to a men's L, making it a very rare large size. Generally, French people at the time were often of small stature, so the size range was small, and there were very few large items in circulation. It is rare to find an item with such a perfect combination of condition, size, and brand. It is perfect for collecting or for wearing and "aging" over time. This is a piece to be worn across generations.
