HISTORY

  • This is a 1959 French Navy ramie linen sailor smock. After World War II, the French Navy (Marine Nationale) revamped their deck work uniforms and adopted the pullover "Vareuse de pont (deck smock)". Until the early 1950s, heavy twill fabric was the mainstream, but this smock was made of ramie linen material designed for deck work in the intense heat. This is the model issued between 1952 and 1963, which used chambray fabric with a ramie linen blend.

DETAIL

  • The square sailor collar has two white stripes. The front has no buttons, only a deep V-slit. The practical pullover design is unique to ships, minimizing the risk of getting caught on ropes or equipment. The fabric is ramie linen chambray. It has the firmness and bouncy feel that is characteristic of ramie, but also the texture of French linen, which is quick-drying and highly salt-resistant. The sleeves have tucked cuffs, and are designed to fit comfortably even when rolled up. In addition, there are two large patch pockets on the inside, one on each side, for quickly storing gloves and small items, making it a functional piece of deck workwear. When worn inside out as shown in the photo, it has a clean, minimalist look, and the patch pockets are a striking accent. Personally, I would like you to try this style.
