HISTORY

In 1933, the German Wehrmacht introduced the Drillichanzug, a natural-colored herringbone twill (HBT) trousers for training and maintenance work. While this was later revised to a green dye, the initial model was based on undyed fabric, and this particular example is a derivative of that. These trousers were paired with the striped jacket worn by wounded and sick soldiers in military hospitals (Lazarett). The light blue/navy stripes on a white background were intended to prevent confusion with combat uniforms and allow for easy identification of recuperating soldiers. After 1940, production of the striped version of the HBT trousers ceased as all HBT trousers were standardized to a single green color.

DETAIL

The garment is made of a high-density cotton HBT with a base of off-white, and a cotton-linen drill (drill) fabric with blue and navy stripes. It has a crisp feel and quick-drying properties, and its unique, thick yet flowing texture is difficult to replicate in modern times. The buttons are made of cream-colored compressed paper, reflecting the metal-saving measures of the time. The pocket is only on the left side, which is thought to have been a simplified design to suit its use as medical wear. The suspenders that were used at the time are also included.

CONDITION

There is a repair mark of about 2-3cm on the back near the hip. The original buttons remain intact, and there is no other noticeable damage, so it is in good condition and can be worn without any problems.
