HISTORY
- With the outbreak of war in 1939, cotton imports from overseas were largely halted. Under Germany's "Autarkie" (self-sufficiency) policy, flax cultivation was encouraged to replace cotton. Following this material shift, in the early 1940s, linen herringbone twill (HBT) trousers were officially adopted, replacing the traditional off-white cotton drill. The HBT weave's herringbone ridges provide a firm yet lightweight fabric, and its quick drying even when exposed to sea breezes or oils made it ideal for deck work. As indicated by the "Po 1942" stamp, this trouser was manufactured in 1942. This mid- to late-season model was produced during the transitional period, when the company underwent redesign and transitioned to mass production. The densely woven linen HBT has a distinctive crisp feel, making it a practical material that remains non-sticky even when exposed to sweat or sea breezes, and dries quickly.
Due to their durability, HBT trousers continued to be used even after the end of the war, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain trousers in good condition.
