HISTORY
-
In 1935, as the French Army expanded its motorcycle-equipped messenger units, it produced the "Surtout / Manteau Motocycliste Modèle 1935," a lightweight, windproof overcoat.
Traditional thick wool coats have the drawback of becoming heavy with mud and rain and drying slowly, so to compensate for this, a high-density canvas is used. It is designed as a "duster coat" that can be quickly put on over a uniform or leather jacket.
Although worn during the Battle of Dunkirk in the early stages of World War II, the linen canvas version like this one was produced in very limited quantities to accommodate the hot and humid climates. Its market availability is extremely limited compared to the cotton version, and its unique flowing material makes it a must-have for any Euro-vintage fan.
DETAIL
-
The fabric is made from tightly woven French linen. The coarse neps characteristic of linen, combined with its oily sheen, allow it to soften with wear, creating the distinctive drape of French linen. Its patina over time is exceptional compared to cotton. The front is concealed and features five hemispherical metal khaki buttons, along with a chin strap for windproofing, a feature of the time. The collar can be turned up to create a stand-up collar, adding an accent to any outfit. The raglan sleeves, which extend from the shoulders, allow for a wide range of motion, and the deep center vent at the back are designed to accommodate a forward-leaning riding posture. The sleeves are slightly shorter, as regulations of the time required long gauntlet gloves, which reached above the elbow, to be worn over the sleeves. This prevents rain from seeping in and maintains wrist control. The cuffs can be adjusted with a buckle tab, maintaining a snug fit even when gloves are removed. Two leg straps are built into the hem, which can be fastened under the crotch to prevent the hem from flapping when running, and a belt made of the same material is sewn around the waist. The waist pockets are designed with a through-hole design for smooth access from the clothing worn underneath. This is a French masterpiece, made with meaning in every detail.
This is a masterpiece that represents the French military, with every detail having a clear purpose.
